Joseph Pilates was male nurse in the WW1 German army. He was way ahead of his time, because he invented a particular form of exercise that addresses the exercise needs of wounded personnel. However, Pilates exercises are valuable for more than only rehabilitation patients, and the art is being practiced world-wide today.
